Sufyan told us: Ibn al-Munkadir heard Jabir say: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me: "If the wealth of Bahrain were to come, I would surely give you like this, and like this, and like this." He said: When the wealth of Bahrain arrived after the death of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, Abu Bakr said, "Whoever had a debt owed to him by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, or a promise, let him come to me." He said: So I came, and I said, "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, 'If the wealth of Bahrain were to come, I would give you like this and like this,' three times." He said, "Then take." He said: So I took. Some of those who heard it said: "I found it to be five hundred." He said: So I took it. Then I came to him again and he did not give me anything, then I came to him again and he did not give me anything, then I came to him a third time and he did not give me anything. So I said, "Either you give me, or you are being stingy with me." He said, "Did you say I am stingy with you? What disease is worse than stinginess? You never asked me for anything but that I wanted to give it to you."
