Hadrat Amr bin Salama (may Allah be well pleased with him) narrates that Abu Qilaba (upon him be mercy) said to me, 'Why don't you meet him and ask him?' He says, 'I met him and asked him, and he said: We lived at a water source which was on the people's route. Caravans used to pass by us, and we would ask them: What has happened to the people? What is this man? They would say: He claims that Allah has sent him, that revelation has been sent down to him, or that Allah has revealed such and such. I would memorize those words, and it was as though they were embedded in my chest. The Arabs were delaying their acceptance of Islam until the Conquest. They would say: Leave him and his people alone; if he prevails over them, then he is a true the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). When the event of the Conquest occurred, every tribe hastened to embrace Islam, and my father was the first among our people to accept Islam. When he returned, he said: By Allah, I have truly come from the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). He stated: Offer such-and-such prayer at such-and-such time, and offer such-and-such prayer at such-and-such time. When the time for prayer comes, one of you should give the Adhan, and the one among you who knows the most Quran should lead you. They looked and found no one who knew more Quran than me, because I used to learn from the caravans. So they made me their Imam while I was a boy of six or seven years. I had a cloak on me which would ride up when I prostrated. A woman from the neighbourhood said: Will you not cover the body of your reciter from us! So they bought cloth and had a shirt made for me, and I was never so happy with anything as I was with that shirt.

حضرت عمرو بن سلمہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ فرماتے ہیں کہ ابو قلابہ رحمۃ اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ نے مجھ سے فرمایا کہ کیا تم ان سے مل کر ان سے نہیں پوچھتے؟ فرماتے ہیں کہ میں ان سے ملا اور پوچھا تو انہوں نے فرمایا کہ ہم ایک ایسے پانی کے مقام پر رہتے تھے جو لوگوں کی گزرگاہ تھی۔ ہمارے پاس سے قافلے گزرتے تو ہم ان سے پوچھتے کہ لوگوں کو کیا ہوا ہے؟ یہ شخص کون ہیں؟ وہ کہتے کہ یہ دعویٰ فرماتے ہیں کہ اللہ تعالیٰ نے انہیں بھیجا ہے، ان پر وحی نازل ہوئی ہے، یا اللہ تعالیٰ نے ایسا ایسا وحی فرمایا ہے۔ میں وہ باتیں یاد کر لیتا تھا اور گویا میرے سینے میں جم جاتی تھیں۔ عرب لوگ فتح مکہ تک اسلام قبول کرنے میں تاخیر کرتے تھے اور کہتے تھے کہ انہیں اور ان کی قوم کو چھوڑو، اگر وہ ان پر غالب آ گئے تو وہ سچے نبی ہیں۔ جب فتح مکہ ہوئی تو ہر قوم نے اسلام قبول کرنے میں جلدی کی اور میرے والد نے بھی اپنی قوم سے پہلے اسلام قبول کیا۔ جب وہ واپس آئے تو فرمایا کہ خدا کی قسم! میں واقعی نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس سے آیا ہوں۔ حضور صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: فلاں نماز فلاں وقت میں پڑھو اور فلاں نماز فلاں وقت میں، اور جب نماز کا وقت آئے تو تم میں سے ایک اذان دے اور جو قرآن سب سے زیادہ جانتا ہو وہ تمہاری امامت کرائے۔ لوگوں نے دیکھا تو مجھ سے زیادہ قرآن جاننے والا کوئی نہ تھا کیونکہ میں قافلوں سے سیکھتا رہتا تھا۔ چنانچہ انہوں نے مجھے آگے کر دیا حالانکہ میری عمر چھ یا سات سال کی تھی اور مجھ پر ایک چادر تھی جب میں سجدہ کرتا تو وہ اوپر ہٹ جاتی۔ محلے کی ایک عورت نے کہا کہ اپنے قاری کا ستر تو ڈھانکو! تو لوگوں نے کپڑا خرید کر میرے لیے قمیص سلوا دی اور مجھے کسی چیز سے اتنی خوشی نہیں ہوئی جتنی اس قمیص سے ہوئی۔
