English Translation
Waki' narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, who said: I heard al-Bara' bin 'Azib say: When this verse was revealed — 'Allah has preferred those who strive [in His cause] above those who sit back, with a great reward' — Ibn Umm Maktum came to him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what do you command me to do, for I am blind?' He said: Then there was revealed: 'except those who have a disability.' He said: Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'Bring me the shoulder-blade and the inkpot,' or 'the tablet and the inkpot.'
