English Translation
Abdullah ibn Numayr narrated to us: Mujalid narrated to us, from Amir, from Adi ibn Hatim, who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he taught me Islam and described the prayer to me, and how I should pray each prayer at its time. Then he said to me: How will you be, O son of Hatim, when you ride out from the palaces of Yemen fearing none but Allah, until you alight at the palaces of al-Hirah? I said: O Messenger of Allah, then where are the raiding parties of Tayy and its men? He said: Allah will suffice you against Tayy and whoever else. I said: O Messenger of Allah, we are a people who hunt with these dogs and hawks - what is lawful for us from that? He said: Lawful for you is {what you have taught of trained beasts of prey, training them as Allah has taught you; so eat what they catch for you, and mention the name of Allah over it}. So whatever you have trained of a dog or a hawk, then release it and mention the name of Allah over it, eat what it catches for you. I said: Even if it kills it? He said: Even if it kills it, so long as it did not eat any of it, for it only caught it for you. I said: What do you think if other dogs mix with our dogs when we release them? He said: Do not eat until you know that it was your dog that caught it for you. I said: O Messenger of Allah, we are a people who shoot with the mi'rad (a blunt-headed arrow) - what is lawful for us? He said: Do not eat what you strike with the mi'rad except what you have properly slaughtered.
