Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us: Shu'bah told us, who said: I heard Abu Ishaq say: Jarir ibn Abdullah was in an expedition to Armenia, and they were struck by famine or hunger. Jarir wrote to Mu'awiya: "I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say, 'Whoever does not show mercy to people, Allah will not show mercy to him.'" He said: So he sent for him and he came to him, and he said, "Did you hear this yourself from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?" He said, "Yes." So he let them return home and provided for them. Abu Ishaq said: My father was in that army, and he brought back a velvet cloak from what Mu'awiya had provided him.
