Ibn Abbas said: The prohibition of wine was revealed regarding two tribes from the Ansar who drank until they became intoxicated and began playing roughly with one another. When they sobered up, a man would see marks on his face, head, and beard and say: 'My brother so-and-so did this to me. By Allah, if he had been kind and merciful to me, he would not have done this.' They had been brothers with no grudges in their hearts, but grudges entered their hearts. So Allah, the Exalted, revealed: {Indeed, wine, gambling, stone altars, and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid them that you may succeed. Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through wine and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist?} Then some people who were being presumptuous said: 'It is an abomination, and it is in the belly of so-and-so who was killed at Badr, and so-and-so who was killed at Uhud.' So Allah, the Exalted, revealed: {There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten...} the verse.
