Narrated Musa ibn Nafi: I came to Makkah four days before the day of Tarwiyah, intending to benefit by combining Umrah with Hajj (Hajj Tamattu). The people said to me, "Your Hajj is now the Hajj of the people of Makkah." So I came to Ata ibn Abi Rabah and asked him about the matter. Ata said: Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) told me that he performed Hajj with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in the year in which he (peace be upon him) had the sacrificial animals (i.e., the Farewell Pilgrimage, because after the migration he (peace be upon him) performed only one Hajj), and some people had entered ihram only for Hajj alone (Ifrad). So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Come out of ihram, circumambulate the House, do the say between Safa and Marwah, cut your hair short, and remain out of ihram, until, when the day of Tarwiyah comes (i.e., the eighth of Dhul-Hijjah), pronounce the Talbiyah for Hajj, and make the ihram with which you came into Hajj Tamattu" (meaning: although that ihram is for Hajj, complete an Umrah with it and come out of ihram, then perform Hajj, and it will become Hajj Tamattu). The people said, "How can we make it Tamattu when we have named Hajj?" He (peace be upon him) said, "Do what I command you. For if I had not brought the sacrificial animal with me, I too would have done as I command you, except that my ihram cannot be released until the sacrifice reaches its place (i.e., the place of slaughter)." So the people did accordingly (as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) commanded).

موسیٰ بن نافع کہتے ہیں کہمیں حج کے ساتھ عمرہ کا فائدہ اٹھانے (حج تمتع) کی غرض سے یوم ترویہ سے چار روز قبل مکہ آیا تو لوگوں نے مجھے کہا کہ تیرا حج تو اہل مکہ کا حج ہے۔ تب میں نے عطاء بن ابی رباح کے پاس آیا اور ان سے مسئلہ دریافت کیا تو عطاء نے کہا کہ مجھ سے سیدنا جابر بن عبداللہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے بیان کیا کہ انہوں نے رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے ساتھ حج کیا جس سال آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے ساتھ ہدی تھی (یعنی حجۃ الوداع میں اس لئے کہ ہجرت کے بعد آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے ایک ہی حج کیا ہے) اور بعض لوگوں نے صرف حج مفرد کا احرام باندھا تھا، تو رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ تم احرام کھول ڈالو اور بیت اللہ کا طواف کرو اور صفا و مروہ کی سعی کرو اور بال کم کرا لو اور حلال رہو، یہاں تک کہ جب ترویہ کا دن ہو (یعنی آٹھ ذوالحجہ) تو حج کی لبیک پکارو اور تم جو احرام لے کر آئے ہو اس کو حج تمتع کر ڈالو (یعنی اگرچہ وہ احرام حج کا ہے مگر عمرہ کر کے کھول لو اور پھر حج کر لینا تو یہ حج تمتع ہو جائے گا) لوگوں نے عرض کیا کہ ہم اسے تمتع کیسے بنائیں، حالانکہ ہم نے حج کا نام لیا ہے؟ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ وہی کرو جس کا میں تمہیں حکم دیتا ہوں۔ اس لئے کہ میں اگر قربانی کو ساتھ نہ لاتا تو میں بھی ویسا ہی کرتا جیسا تم کو حکم دیتا ہوں مگر یہ کہ میرا احرام کھل نہیں سکتا جب تک کہ قربانی اپنے محل (یعنی ذبح خانہ) تک نہ پہنچ جائے۔ پھر لوگوں نے اسی طرح کیا (جیسا رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے حکم فرمایا تھا)۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 670]
