Al-Shafi'i narrated from Sufyan from Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad from Miqsam from Ibn 'Abbas that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) underwent cupping while in ihram and fasting. Al-Shafi'i said: Ibn 'Abbas heard from the Prophet (peace be upon him) in the year of the Conquest, and he was not in ihram that day, nor did he accompany him in ihram before the Farewell Pilgrimage. So Ibn 'Abbas's mention of the Prophet's cupping is from the Farewell Pilgrimage in the year 10, while the hadith 'The one who cups and the one cupped have broken their fast' is from the year 8, two years before the Farewell Pilgrimage. If both are authentic, then Ibn 'Abbas's hadith abrogates, and the hadith about cupping breaking the fast is abrogated. Al-Shafi'i said: The chains of both hadiths are similar, but Ibn 'Abbas's hadith has a better chain. If one avoids cupping as a precaution, I would prefer it, lest he weaken and break his fast. But if he undergoes cupping, it does not break his fast. Along with Ibn 'Abbas's hadith is the analogy and what I know from some Companions and Successors, and most of the Medinans, that cupping does not break one's fast.
