Abu Tahir al-Faqih informed us... from Ja'far ibn Burqan who said: A letter from Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) came to us: 'Give charity before the prayer. {He has certainly succeeded who purifies himself and mentions the name of his Lord and prays} [al-A'la: 14-15]. And say as your father (Adam) said: {Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers} [al-A'raf: 23]. And say as Nuh said: {If You do not forgive me and have mercy on me, I will be among the losers} [Hud: 47]. And say as Ibrahim said: {And the One whom I hope will forgive me my sin on the Day of Judgment} [al-Shu'ara: 82]. And say as Musa said: {My Lord, I have wronged myself, so forgive me, and He forgave him. Indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful} [al-Qasas: 16]. And say as Dhul-Nun (Yunus) said: {There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers} [al-Anbiya: 87].' And I believe he also wrote: Whoever does not have anything to give in charity, let him fast - meaning, and Allah knows best, after the Eid.
