Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Qadi informed us... from Ibn Wahb, who said Yunus informed him that he asked Ibn Shihab about the tashahud (opening supplication) of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on Friday. Ibn Shihab said: 'Indeed, all praise is due to Allah; we praise Him, seek His help, and seek His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Him from the evils of our souls. Whomever Allah guides, none can misguide; and whomever He leads astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. He sent him with the truth as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner before the Hour. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger is guided, and whoever disobeys them has gone astray. We ask Allah our Lord to make us among those who obey Him, obey His Messenger, follow His pleasure, and avoid His anger, for we belong to Him and are for Him.' Ibn Shihab said: 'And it reached us from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) that he used to say when he delivered the sermon: Everything that is coming is near; there is no distance for what is coming. Allah does not hasten for anyone's haste, nor lighten for people's affairs. What Allah wills happens, not what people will. People want one thing and Allah wants another. What Allah wills comes to pass even if people dislike it. There is nothing that can distance what Allah has brought near, and nothing that can bring near what Allah has put far. Nothing happens except by Allah's permission.' Ibn Shihab said: ''Umar ibn al-Khattab used to say in his sermon: Successful among you is he who is protected from desire, greed, and anger.'
