Qurad Abu Nuh narrated to us: Ikrimah ibn Ammar informed us, from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, from Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, who said: I asked Aisha, Mother of the Believers, with what did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, open his prayer when he rose at night? She said: When he rose, he would say the takbir and say: O Allah, Lord of Gabriel, Michael, and Israfil, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, You judge between Your servants concerning that in which they differed; guide me to the truth concerning that in which there was difference, by Your permission; indeed You guide whom You will to a straight path. Yahya said: Abu Salamah said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when he rose at night, would say: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the accursed Satan, from his stirring, his blowing, and his spitting. He said: And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to say: Seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan, from his stirring, his blowing, and his spitting. They said: O Messenger of Allah, what are his stirring, his blowing, and his spitting? He said: As for his stirring, it is this deathly seizure that takes hold of the children of Adam; as for his blowing, it is pride; and as for his spitting, it is poetry.
