Surayj told us: Ibn Abi al-Zinad told us, from Hisham ibn Urwah, from his father, from A'ishah, who said: "O son of my sister, the hair of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was longer than earlobe-length but shorter than shoulder-length. And by Allah, O son of my sister, a month would sometimes pass over the household of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, without any fire being kindled in the house of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, except when there was a little meat; and there was nothing but the two black things, water and dates - except that around us there were households of the Ansar, may Allah reward them well, both recently and long ago, who every day would send to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, some of the milk of their milch animals, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would partake of that milk. And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, died while there was nothing in my cupboard that any living creature could eat, except a small amount, nearly half a measure of barley, which I ate from until it had lasted a long time without running out; then I measured it out, and it ran out - would that I had not measured it! And by Allah, his bedding was of leather stuffed with palm-fiber." Al-Hashimi said: "some of the milk of their milch animals," and mentioned something similar, except for the part about the bedding.
