Affan narrated to us: Hammad bin Salamah narrated to us: Thabit narrated to us, from Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Layla, from Suhayb, who said: While the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was sitting with his companions, he laughed, and said: Will you not ask me why I am laughing? They said: O Messenger of Allah, why are you laughing? He said: I marvel at the affair of the believer — indeed his affair is all good. If something he loves befalls him he praises Allah, and that is good for him; and if something he dislikes befalls him he is patient, and that is good for him; and not everyone's affair is entirely good for him except the believer's. My father said: Affan also narrated it to us; Sulayman narrated it to us, Thabit narrated to us this same wording, and I think he was mistaken — this is the wording of Hammad; and he had narrated to us, Sulayman said, Thabit narrated to us similar to the wording of Abdur-Rahman, from Sulayman, and that was from his book which he read out to us.
