حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَامِلٍ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ مَعْبَدِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ حَدَّثَنِي رَجُلٌ فِي مَسْجِدِ دِمَشْقَ عَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا الصَّوْمُ قَالَ فَرْضٌ مُجْزِئٌ.

Abu Kamil told us: Hammad ibn Salamah told us, from Ma'bad ibn Hilal: a man in the mosque of Damascus told me, from Awf ibn Malik, from Abu Dharr, that he said: O Messenger of Allah, what is fasting? He said: "An obligatory duty that suffices."
