Sulayman b. Dawud al-Tayalisi told us: Dawud b. Ibrahim al-Wasiti told me: Habib b. Salim told me, from al-Nu'man b. Bashir, who said: We were sitting in the mosque with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Bashir was a man who kept his speech restrained. Abu Tha'laba al-Khushani came and said, "O Bashir b. Sa'd, do you remember the hadith of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, about the rulers?" Hudhayfa said, "I remember his sermon." So Abu Tha'laba sat down, and Hudhayfa said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Prophethood will remain among you for as long as Allah wills, then He will remove it when He wills. Then there will be a caliphate following the pattern of prophethood, and it will remain for as long as Allah wills, then He will remove it when He wills. Then there will be a biting monarchy, and it will remain for as long as Allah wills, then He will remove it when He wills. Then there will be a tyrannical kingship, and it will remain for as long as Allah wills, then He will remove it when He wills. Then there will be a caliphate following the pattern of prophethood." Then he fell silent. Habib said: When Umar b. Abd al-Aziz took office - and Yazid b. al-Nu'man b. Bashir was among his companions - I wrote to him with this hadith, reminding him of it, and I said to him, "I hope that the Commander of the Faithful," meaning Umar, "will be after the biting monarchy and the tyrannical kingship." My letter was brought before Umar b. Abd al-Aziz, and he was pleased and delighted by it.
