حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ رَجَاءٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَوْسَ بْنَ ضَمْعَجٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا مَسْعُودٍ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ الْبَدْرِيَّ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ يَؤُمُّ الْقَوْمَ أَقْرَؤُهُمْ لِكِتَابِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى وَأَقْدَمُهُمْ قِرَاءَةً فَإِنْ كَانَتْ قِرَاءَتُهُمْ سَوَاءً فَلْيَؤُمَّهُمْ أَقْدَمُهُمْ هِجْرَةً فَإِنْ كَانَ هِجْرَتُهُمْ سَوَاءً فَلْيَؤُمَّهُمْ أَكْبَرُهُمْ سِنًّا وَلَا يُؤَمُّ الرَّجُلُ فِي أَهْلِهِ وَلَا فِي سُلْطَانِهِ وَلَا يُجْلَسُ عَلَى تَكْرِمَتِهِ فِي بَيْتِهِ إِلَّا أَنْ يَأْذَنَ لَكَ أَوْ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ.

Affan narrated to us, he said: Shu'bah narrated to us, he said: Isma'il ibn Raja' informed me, he said: I heard Aws ibn Dam'aj say: I heard Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari al-Badri narrate from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said, "The one who leads the people in prayer should be the one most versed in the Book of Allah, the Exalted, and the earliest of them in learning it by heart. If they are equal in recitation, then the one who emigrated earliest should lead them. If they are equal in emigration, then the eldest of them in age should lead them. No man should lead another in prayer in his own house or in his place of authority, nor should one sit in his seat of honor in his house, except with his permission or unless he permits you."
