حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا صَفْوَانُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَزْهَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْهَوْزَنِيُّ قَالَ أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ فِي مَوْضِعٍ آخَرَ الْحَرَازِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي عَامِرٍ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ لُحَيٍّ قَالَ حَجَجْنَا مَعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا مَكَّةَ قَامَ حِينَ صَلَّى صَلَاةَ الظُّهْرِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْكِتَابَيْنِ افْتَرَقُوا فِي دِينِهِمْ عَلَى ثِنْتَيْنِ وَسَبْعِينَ مِلَّةً وَإِنَّ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةَ سَتَفْتَرِقُ عَلَى ثَلَاثٍ وَسَبْعِينَ مِلَّةً يَعْنِي الْأَهْوَاءَ كُلُّهَا فِي النَّارِ إِلَّا وَاحِدَةً وَهِيَ الْجَمَاعَةُ وَإِنَّهُ سَيَخْرُجُ فِي أُمَّتِي أَقْوَامٌ تَجَارَى بِهِمْ تِلْكَ الْأَهْوَاءُ كَمَا يَتَجَارَى الْكَلْبُ بِصَاحِبِهِ لَا يَبْقَى مِنْهُ عِرْقٌ وَلَا مَفْصِلٌ إِلَّا دَخَلَهُ وَاللَّهِ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْعَرَبِ لَئِنْ لَمْ تَقُومُوا بِمَا جَاءَ بِهِ نَبِيُّكُمْ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَغَيْرُكُمْ مِنْ النَّاسِ أَحْرَى أَنْ لَا يَقُومَ بِهِ.

Abu al-Mughira said: Safwan narrated to us, saying: Azhar ibn 'Abdullah al-Hawzani narrated to me - Abu al-Mughira said in another place: al-Harazi - from Abu 'Amir 'Abdullah ibn Luhayy, who said: We performed Hajj with Mu'awiya ibn Abi Sufyan. When we arrived at Mecca, he stood up, once he had prayed the noon prayer, and said: 'The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The People of the Two Books split in their religion into seventy-two sects, and this nation will split into seventy-three sects' - meaning the sects of desire - 'all of them in the Fire except one, and it is the united body; and there will emerge among my nation people whom these desires will run through as rabies runs through the one bitten by the mad dog, leaving no vein or joint of his untouched. By Allah, O company of the Arabs, if you do not uphold what your Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, brought, then others among the people are yet less likely to uphold it.'
