English Translation
Abu Umamah al-Bahili said when he saw the heads of the Kharijites: "See what the devil has done" - three times - "dogs of the Fire" - three times. Then he said: "The worst of those killed under the shadow of the sky" - three times - "whoever they killed was the best of those killed under the shadow of the sky." I said: "O Abu Umamah, are you saying this yourself or is it something you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)?" He said: "I would indeed be bold. Do you recite the verses at the beginning of Al 'Imran?" {As for those in whose hearts is deviation, they follow what is ambiguous thereof} - this was revealed about these people. Until you recite the verse in the middle of Al 'Imran: {On the Day when some faces will turn white and some faces will turn black} - this was revealed about them. I said: "What makes you weep, O Abu Umamah?" He said: "They were believers" - or he said: Muslims.
