English Translation
I was in a state of ihram and I saw a gazelle. I threw at it and hit the base of its horn, and it collapsed. This troubled me, so I went to Umar ibn al-Khattab to ask him. I found beside him a white man with a delicate face — it was Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf. I asked Umar, and he turned to Abd al-Rahman and said: 'Do you think a sheep would suffice him?' He said: 'Yes.' So he ordered me to slaughter a sheep. When we left his presence, my companion said: 'The Commander of the Faithful could not give you a ruling until he asked the other man.' Umar heard some of his words and struck him with the whip. Then he turned to strike me, but I said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, I said nothing; he is the one who said it.' So he left me. Then he said: 'You wanted to kill a sacred animal and exceed the ruling.' Then he said: 'In a person there are ten qualities: nine good and one bad, and that single bad one ruins them.' Then he said: 'Beware of the company of youth.'
