English Translation
Abdullah ibn Mas'ud said: "When we returned from the expedition of Hudaybiyyah, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Who will guard us tonight?' I said: 'I will, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'You will fall asleep.' Then he repeated: 'Who will guard us tonight?' I said: 'I will' — I said it three times. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Then it is you.' So I guarded them until near dawn, then the Messenger of Allah's words overtook me — he had said: 'You will fall asleep' — and I fell asleep. Nothing woke us except the heat of the sun on our backs. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stood up and did as he used to do with ablution and the two rak'ahs of Fajr, then he led us in the morning prayer. When he finished, he said: 'If Allah had wanted you not to sleep through it, you would not have slept. But He willed this to be — or He said: to be — for those who come after you. This is for whoever sleeps or forgets.' Then the camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and the camels of the people scattered. The people went out searching and brought back their camels, except the camel of the Messenger of Allah. He said to me: 'Go in this direction.' I went where he told me, and I found her reins tangled around a tree — by Allah, only a hand could have untied it. I brought her back and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, by the One Who sent you with the truth, I found her reins wrapped around a tree that only a hand could have loosened.' Then Surah al-Fath was revealed to the Messenger of Allah: {Indeed, We have given you a clear conquest.}"
