English Translation
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: When this verse was revealed: 'Whether you reveal what is in yourselves or conceal it, Allah will bring you to account for it' (al-Baqarah: 284), it was difficult for the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). They came to the Messenger of Allah and knelt down, and said: O Messenger of Allah, we were given duties we can bear — prayer, fasting, jihad, and charity. But now this verse has been revealed to you, and we cannot bear it. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Do you want to say as the People of the Two Books said before you: We hear and we disobey? Rather say: We hear and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the destination.' When the people accepted this, Allah the Almighty revealed: 'The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers' (al-Baqarah: 285). Then He abrogated it and revealed: 'Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity' (al-Baqarah: 286).
