English Translation
It is narrated from Humayd ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Awf that Marwan said to his gatekeeper Rafi: Go to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and say: If every one of us who rejoices in what he has done and loves to be praised for what he has not done is to be punished, then all of us will be punished (for this defect exists in all of us). So Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: What have you to do with this verse? This verse was revealed concerning the People of the Book. Then Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) recited this verse: "And when Allah took the covenant..." to the end, and then recited the verse: "Do not think those who..." Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) asked the People of the Book about something, and they concealed it and told him something else in its place. Then they went out having given the impression that they had told him (peace be upon him) what he had asked, and they sought praise from him (peace be upon him) and rejoiced within themselves at what they had done (i.e., at concealing the actual matter he, peace be upon him, had asked them about). So Allah, the Exalted, tells them that they will be punished — and what is meant is those same People of the Book.
Urdu Translation
حمید بن عبدالرحمن بن عوف سے روایت ہے کہمروان نے اپنے دربان رافع سے کہا کہ ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کے پاس جا اور کہہ کہ اگر ہم میں سے ہر اس آدمی کو عذاب ہو جو اپنے کئے پر خوش ہوتا ہے اور چاہتا ہے کہ لوگ اس کی اس بات پر تعریف کریں جو اس نے نہیں کی، پھر تو ہم سب کو عذاب ہو گا (کیونکہ ہم سب میں یہ عیب موجود ہے) تو سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے کہا کہ تمہیں اس آیت سے کیا تعلق ہے؟ یہ آیت تو اہل کتاب کے حق میں اتری ہے۔ پھر سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے یہ آیت ((واذ اخذ اﷲ ....)) آخر تک پڑھی اور پھر ((لا تحسبنّ الّذین ....)) آیت پڑھی۔ سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے کہا کہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے اہل کتاب سے کوئی بات پوچھی تو انہوں نے اس کو چھپایا اور اس کے بدلے دوسری بات بتائی۔ پھر اس حال میں نکلے کہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکو یہ سمجھایا کہ ہم نے آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکو وہ بات بتا دی جو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے پوچھی تھی اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمسے اپنی تعریف کے طلبگار ہوئے اور دل میں اپنے کئے پر خوش ہوئے (یعنی اپنی اصل بات کے چھپانے پر جو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے ان سے پوچھی تھی تو اللہ تعالیٰ انہیں کو فرماتا ہے کہ ان کو عذاب ہو گا اور مراد وہی اہل کتاب ہیں)۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 2128]
