English Translation
Narrated Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent some horsemen toward Najd, and they brought back a man of Banu Hanifah named Thumamah bin Uthal, who was the chief of the people of Yamamah. He was tied to one of the pillars of the mosque. The Prophet (peace be upon him) went to him and said, "O Thumamah! What do you think (of what I will do to you)?" He said, "O Muhammad (peace be upon him), my expectation is good; if you kill me, you will kill one who has blood (that is, there is no impropriety in it, for my blood will not go in vain, but there are those who will avenge me); and if you show favor and release me, I will be grateful to you (peace be upon him); and if you (peace be upon him) desire wealth and property, that too is available — as much as you wish." Hearing this, he (peace be upon him) went away. The next day he (peace be upon him) again asked, "O Thumamah! What do you think?" He said, "My view is the same as I have already said: if you (peace be upon him) show favor and release me, I will be grateful, and if you kill me, you will kill one whose blood will be avenged, and if you want wealth, then ask; whatever you want will be given." He (peace be upon him) left him tied as he was. Then on the third day he asked, "O Thumamah! What is your view?" He said, "The same that I have already said: if you (peace be upon him) show favor and release me, I will be grateful, and if you kill me, you will kill one whose blood will be avenged, and if you want wealth, then ask; whatever you want will be given." He (peace be upon him) said: "Release Thumamah." The people complied with the command and released him. Thumamah went to a palm-grove near the mosque, performed a bath, and came into the mosque and said, "I bear witness that there is no true god but Allah, and indeed Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah. O Muhammad (peace be upon him)! By Allah, there was no face on the whole face of the earth more hateful to me to look upon than your face (peace be upon him), but now today your face (peace be upon him) is the most beloved of all to me; and by Allah, no religion was more hateful to me than your religion (peace be upon him), and now your religion (peace be upon him) is the most beloved of all to me; and by Allah, no city was more hateful to me than your city (peace be upon him), and now your city (peace be upon him) has become the best of all cities to me. Your horsemen (peace be upon him) captured me while I was going with the intention of Umrah; now what do you (peace be upon him) command?" The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) congratulated him and gave him permission to perform Umrah. When he came to Makkah, someone said to him, "Have you become irreligious (an apostate)?" He said, "No, by Allah; rather, I have submitted to Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). And by Allah, not a single grain of wheat will reach you from Yamamah until the Prophet (peace be upon him) grants permission." [Mukhtasar Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1152]
Urdu Translation
سیدنا ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہرسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے نجد کی طرف کچھ سوار روانہ فرمائے، تو وہ بنی حنیفہ کے ایک شخص ثمامہ بن اثال کو پکڑ لائے جو اہل یمامہ کا سردار تھا۔ پھر اسے مسجد کے ایک ستون سے باندھ دیا۔ نبی کریمصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے اس کے پاس جا کر کہا کہ اے ثمامہ! تیرا کیا خیال ہے؟ (کہ میں تیرے ساتھ کیا کروں گا) وہ بولا کہ اے محمد (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) میرا خیال بہتر ہے، اگر آپ مجھے مار ڈالیں گے، تو ایسے شخص کو ماریں گے جو خون والا ہے (یعنی اس میں کوئی بھی قباحت نہیں کیونکہ میرا خون ضائع نہیں جائے گا بلکہ میرا بدلہ لینے والے موجود ہیں)۔ اور اگر آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلماحسان کر کے مجھے چھوڑ دیں گے، تو میں آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکا شکرگزار ہوں گا اور اگر آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلممال و دولت چاہتے ہوں تو وہ بھی حاضر ہے، جتنا آپ چاہیں۔ یہ سن کر آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمچلے گئے۔ دوسرے دن پھر آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے پوچھا کہ اے ثمامہ! تیرا کیا خیال ہے؟ وہ بولا کہ میرا خیال وہی ہے جو میں عرض کر چکا کہ اگر آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلماحسان کر کے چھوڑ دیں گے، تو میں شکرگزار ہوں گا اور اگر قتل کرو گے تو ایسے شخص کو قتل کرو گے جس کا بدلہ لیا جائے گا اور اگر مال چاہتے ہو تو مانگو، جو چاہو گے دیا جائے گا۔ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے اس کو ویسا ہی بندھا رہنے دیا۔ پھر تیسرے دن پوچھا اے ثمامہ! تیرا کیا گمان ہے؟ وہ بولا کہ وہی جو میں عرض کر چکا کہ اگر آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلماحسان کر کے چھوڑ دیں گے، تو میں شکرگزار ہوں گا اور اگر قتل کرو گے تو ایسے شخص کو قتل کرو گے جس کا بدلہ لیا جائے گا اور اگر مال چاہتے ہو تو مانگو، جو چاہو گے دیا جائے گا۔ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ ثمامہ کو چھوڑ دو۔ لوگوں نے تعمیل حکم کر کے چھوڑ دیا۔ ثمامہ مسجد کے قریب ہی ایک نخلستان کی طرف گیا اور غسل کر کے مسجد میں آیا اور کہنے لگا کہ”میں گواہی دیتا ہوں کہ اللہ کے سوا کوئی سچا معبود نہیں اور بیشک محمدصلی اللہ علیہ وسلماللہ کے رسول ہیں، اے محمدصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم! اللہ کی قسم مجھے تمام روئے زمین پر کسی کا منہ دیکھ کر اتنا غصہ نہیں آتا تھا جتنا آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکا منہ دیکھ کر آتا تھا، اب آج کے دن آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکا چہرہ سب سے زیادہ مجھ کو پسند ہے، اور اللہ کی قسم آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے دین سے زیادہ کوئی دین مجھے برا معلوم نہ ہوتا تھا اور اب آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکا دین مجھے سب سے بھلا معلوم ہوتا ہے اور اللہ کی قسم! میرے نزدیک آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے شہر سے برا کوئی شہر نہ تھا اور اب آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکا شہر میرے نزدیک سب شہروں سے بہتر ہو گیا ہے۔ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے سواروں نے مجھے گرفتار کیا، جب کہ میں عمرہ کے ارادہ سے جا رہا تھا، اب آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکیا فرماتے ہیں؟ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے اسے مبارکباد دی اور عمرہ کرنے کی اجازت دی۔ جب وہ مکہ میں آئے تو کسی نے اس سے کہا کہ کیا تم بےدین ہو گئے ہو؟ وہ بولے نہیں اللہ کی قسم بلکہ محمد رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکا فرمانبردار ہو گیا ہوں اور اللہ کی قسم تمہارے پاس یمامہ سے اس وقت گندم کا ایک دانہ بھی نہ آنے پائے گا، جب تک کہ نبی کریمصلی اللہ علیہ وسلماجازت نہ دے دیں۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 1152]
