Abu Hurayrah reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out one day or night and met Abu Bakr and Umar. He said: "What has brought you out of your houses at this hour?" They said: "Hunger, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, what has brought you out has brought me out too. Get up." So they got up with him, and he went to a man from the Ansar. The man was not at home. When the woman of the house saw the Prophet, she said: "Welcome!" The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Where is so-and-so?" She said: "He went to fetch fresh water for us." Just then the man came, looked at the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and his two Companions, and said: "Praise be to Allah! No one today has a more honorable guest than me." He went and brought them a bunch of dates with unripe, ripe, and dried dates. He said: "Eat from these." Then he took a knife. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Do not slaughter a milk-giving animal." So he slaughtered a sheep for them, and they ate from the sheep and from the bunch of dates and drank. When they had eaten their fill and drunk, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to Abu Bakr and Umar: "By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, you will surely be asked about this bounty on the Day of Resurrection. Hunger brought you out of your homes, then you did not return until this bounty reached you." Narrated by Muslim.
