It is narrated by Hadrat Sahl bin Sa'd as-Sa'idi (may Allah be well pleased with him) that a woman came to Allah's Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and said, "O Allah's Messenger, I came to offer myself to you (in marriage)." Allah's Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) looked her up and down (carefully), and then Allah's Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) lowed his head. When the woman saw that he had not made any decision regarding her she sat down. A man of his companions then stood up and said, "O Allah's Messenger, if you have no need for her, marry her to me." He asked, "Do you have anything (to give her as dowry)?" He replied, "No, I swear by Allah, O Allah's Messenger." He thereupon said, "Go to your family and see if you can find something." He went and then returned and said, "No, I swear by Allah I found nothing." Allah's Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) then said, "Look for something, even if it should be an iron ring." He went and then returned and said, "No, I swear by Allah, O Allah's Messenger, not even an iron ring; but I have onl this lower garment of mine - - and I shall give her half of it." Allah's Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) then said, "What will she do with your lower garment? For if you wear it, there would be nothing of it on her, and if she wears it, there would be nothing of it on you." The man then sat down and when he had sit for a long time he stood up and Allah's Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) saw him departing, so he commanded him and he was called back. When he came back, he said, "What do you have (i.e. memorized) from the Qur'an?" He replied, "I have Surat such and such and Surat such and such," he counted them. He then asked "Can you recited them by heart?" He replied, "Yes." He said, "Go, for I have given her to you in marriage for the part of the Qur'an which you know."

Another narration has: "Go for I have given her to you in marriage, so teach her some of Qur'an."
A narration by al-Bukhari has: "I have married her to you for the part of the Qur'an which you know."

حضرت سہل بن سعد ساعدی رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ فرماتے ہیں: ایک عورت رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس آئی اور عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! میں اپنے آپ کو آپ کو ہبہ کرنے آئی ہوں۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے اسے نظر اٹھا کر اور جھکا کر غور سے دیکھا، پھر سر جھکا لیا۔ جب عورت نے دیکھا کہ آپ نے اس کے بارے میں کوئی فیصلہ نہیں کیا تو بیٹھ گئی۔ آپ کے ایک صحابی کھڑے ہوئے اور عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! اگر آپ کو اس کی ضرورت نہیں تو میرا نکاح اس سے کرا دیجیے۔ آپ نے پوچھا: کیا تمہارے پاس کچھ ہے؟ اس نے کہا: نہیں، اللہ کی قسم یا رسول اللہ۔ آپ نے فرمایا: اپنے گھر جاؤ دیکھو کچھ ملتا ہے؟ وہ گیا پھر واپس آیا اور کہا: نہیں، اللہ کی قسم یا رسول اللہ، مجھے کچھ نہ ملا۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ڈھونڈو چاہے لوہے کی ایک انگوٹھی ہی ہو۔ وہ گیا پھر واپس آیا اور کہا: نہیں، اللہ کی قسم یا رسول اللہ، لوہے کی انگوٹھی بھی نہیں، لیکن یہ میرا تہبند ہے — سہل فرماتے ہیں: اس کے پاس چادر نہ تھی — آدھا اس کا ہو۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: تمہارا تہبند کیا کرے گا؟ اگر تم پہنو گے تو اس پر کچھ نہ ہوگا اور اگر وہ پہنے گی تو تم پر کچھ نہ ہوگا۔ وہ شخص بیٹھ گیا اور جب کافی دیر ہو گئی تو اٹھ کر جانے لگا۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے اسے جاتے دیکھا تو بلوایا۔ جب آیا تو پوچھا: تمہیں قرآن میں سے کیا یاد ہے؟ اس نے کہا: فلاں فلاں سورتیں اور گن کر بتائیں۔ آپ نے پوچھا: کیا تم انہیں زبانی پڑھ سکتے ہو؟ اس نے کہا: ہاں۔ فرمایا: جاؤ، میں نے تمہیں جو قرآن تمہیں یاد ہے اس کے بدلے اس عورت کا مالک بنا دیا۔ متفق علیہ اور الفاظ مسلم کے ہیں۔ اور مسلم کی ایک روایت میں ہے: جاؤ، میں نے اس کا نکاح تم سے کر دیا، اسے قرآن سکھاؤ۔ اور بخاری کی ایک روایت میں ہے: ہم نے تمہیں جو قرآن تمہیں یاد ہے اس کے بدلے اس کا مالک بنا دیا۔
