Narrated by Hadrat 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (may Allah be well pleased with them both) that one night the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) was occupied with something, so he delayed the 'Isha prayer until we fell asleep in the mosque, then woke up, then fell asleep again, then woke up. Then the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) came out and said: 'No one on the face of the earth is waiting for this prayer except you.' Hadrat Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be well pleased with them both) did not mind whether he prayed it earlier or later, as long as he did not fear that sleep would overpower him and cause him to miss it. He would sometimes sleep before 'Isha. Ibn Juraij said: I said to 'Ata', and 'Ata' said: I heard Hadrat Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be well pleased with them both) say: One night the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) delayed the 'Isha prayer until the people fell asleep and woke up, and fell asleep and woke up. Then Hadrat ' Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be well pleased with him) stood up and said: 'The prayer!' 'Ata' said: Hadrat Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be well pleased with them both) said: Then the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) came out — I can still picture him now — with water dripping from his blessed head and his blessed hand placed on his head. He said: 'Were it not that I would impose hardship on my Ummah, I would have commanded them to pray (Isha) at this time.' I asked 'Ata' in detail about how the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) placed his hand on his head as Hadrat Ibn 'Abbas described it. 'Ata' spread his fingers slightly, then placed the tips on the top of the head and drew them together, running them down the head until his thumb touched the earlobe near the face, at the temple and edge of the beard — neither hurrying nor lingering — and said: 'Were it not that I would impose hardship on my Ummah, I would have commanded them to pray at this time.'

ہم سے محمود نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا ہمیں عبدالرزاق نے خبر دی، انہوں نے کہا مجھے ابن جریج نے خبر دی، انہوں نے کہا مجھے نافع نے خبر دی، انہوں نے کہا ہم سے حضرت عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما نے بیان کیا کہ ایک رات رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کسی کام میں مشغول ہو گئے جس سے عشاء میں اتنی تاخیر ہوئی کہ ہم مسجد میں سو گئے، پھر بیدار ہوئے، پھر سو گئے، پھر بیدار ہوئے۔ پھر نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم تشریف لائے اور ارشاد فرمایا: "روئے زمین پر تمہارے سوا کوئی بھی اس نماز کا انتظار نہیں کرتا۔" حضرت ابن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما کو عشاء جلدی پڑھنے یا تاخیر کرنے سے کوئی فرق نہیں پڑتا تھا بشرطیکہ آپ کو اندیشہ نہ ہو کہ نیند غالب آ جائے گی۔ بلکہ آپ بعض اوقات عشاء سے پہلے بھی سو جایا کرتے تھے۔ ابن جریج نے کہا: میں نے عطاء سے کہا اور عطاء نے کہا: میں نے حضرت ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما سے سنا، آپ فرما رہے تھے: ایک رات رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے عشاء میں اتنی تاخیر فرمائی کہ لوگ سو گئے اور بیدار ہوئے، سو گئے اور بیدار ہوئے۔ تب حضرت عمر بن خطاب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کھڑے ہوئے اور عرض کیا: نماز! عطاء نے کہا: حضرت ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما نے فرمایا: پھر اللہ تعالیٰ کے نبی صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم تشریف لائے — گویا میں ابھی آپ کو دیکھ رہا ہوں — آپ کے سرِ مبارک سے پانی ٹپک رہا تھا اور آپ نے اپنا دستِ مبارک سر پر رکھا ہوا تھا۔ پھر ارشاد فرمایا: "اگر مجھے اپنی امت پر مشقت کا خوف نہ ہوتا تو میں انہیں حکم دیتا کہ عشاء اسی وقت پڑھا کریں۔" ابن جریج نے کہا: پھر میں نے عطاء سے تفصیل سے پوچھا کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے اپنا دست مبارک سر پر کیسے رکھا تھا جیسا کہ حضرت ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما نے بتایا۔ عطاء نے اپنی انگلیاں کچھ کھولیں، پھر انگلیوں کے سِرے سر کے اوپری حصے پر رکھے، پھر انگلیوں کو بند کرتے ہوئے سر پر اس طرح پھیرا کہ انگوٹھا کان کی لو کو چہرے کی طرف سے کنپٹی اور داڑھی کے کنارے پر چھوا — نہ جلدی میں اور نہ سستی میں بلکہ بس ایسے ہی — اور فرمایا: "اگر مجھے اپنی امت پر مشقت کا خوف نہ ہوتا تو میں انہیں حکم دیتا کہ عشاء اسی وقت پڑھا کریں۔"
