It is narrated from Hadrat Sahl bin Abi Hathma (may Allah be well pleased with him) that Hadrat 'Abdullah bin Sahl (may Allah be well pleased with him) and Hadrat Muhayyisa bin Mas'ud bin Zaid (may Allah be well pleased with him) went to Khaibar, which at that time had a peace treaty with the Muslims. They separated, and later Hadrat Muhayyisa (may Allah be well pleased with him) came upon Hadrat 'Abdullah bin Sahl (may Allah be well pleased with him) and found him murdered, wallowing in his blood. He buried him and returned to Madinah. Then Hadrat ' Abd al-Rahman bin Sahl (may Allah be well pleased with him) and the two sons of Mas'ud — Hadrat Muhayyisa and Hadrat Huwayyisa (may Allah be well pleased with them both) — came to the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). Hadrat ' Abd al-Rahman began to speak, but the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) declared: Let the elder speak, let the elder speak! — for Hadrat 'Abd al-Rahman was the youngest among them. So he fell silent and the other two spoke. The Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) declared: Will you swear an oath to establish your right against the killer of your companion? They submitted: How can we swear when we neither witnessed nor were present? The Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) declared: Then shall the Jews clear themselves by swearing fifty oaths? They submitted: How can we accept the oaths of disbelievers? So the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) paid the blood money from his own resources.

حضرت سہل بن ابی حثمہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ حضرت عبداللہ بن سہل رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ اور حضرت محیصہ بن مسعود بن زید رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ خیبر گئے، اُن دنوں خیبر والوں سے صلح تھی۔ وہاں پہنچ کر دونوں الگ ہو گئے۔ پھر حضرت محیصہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ حضرت عبداللہ بن سہل رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کے پاس آئے تو دیکھا کہ وہ خون میں لوٹ رہے ہیں، کسی نے انہیں قتل کر دیا تھا۔ انہوں نے انہیں دفن کیا اور مدینہ واپس آئے۔ پھر حضرت عبدالرحمٰن بن سہل رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ اور مسعود کے دونوں صاحبزادے حضرت محیصہ اور حضرت حویصہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوئے۔ حضرت عبدالرحمٰن نے بات شروع کی تو آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: بڑے بولیں، بڑے بولیں! عبدالرحمٰن سب سے کم عمر تھے، چنانچہ خاموش ہو گئے اور دوسرے دونوں نے بات کی۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: کیا تم قسم کھاتے ہو تاکہ اپنے مقتول (یا ساتھی) کے قاتل پر حق ثابت کر سکو؟ انہوں نے عرض کیا: ہم کیسے قسم کھائیں جبکہ ہم نے نہ دیکھا اور نہ موجود تھے؟ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: پھر کیا یہود پچاس قسمیں کھا کر اپنی براءت ثابت کریں؟ انہوں نے عرض کیا: ہم کفار کی قسموں کا کیسے اعتبار کریں؟ چنانچہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے اپنی طرف سے ان کو دیت ادا فرمائی۔
