It is narrated by Hadrat Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be well pleased with him) that the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) used to practice I'tikaf in the middle third of Ramadan and after passing the twenty nights he used to go back to his house on the 21st, and the people who were in I'tikaf with him also used to go back to their houses. Once in Ramadan, in which he practiced I'tikaf, he stayed in the mosque on the night in which he used to return home, and then he addressed the people and ordered them whatever Allah wished him to order. Then he (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated, "I used to practice I'tikaf for these ten days (i.e. the middle third) but now I intend to stay in I'tikaf for the last ten days; so whoever was in I'tikaf with me should stay at his place of seclusion. I have verily been shown (the date of) this Night (of Qadr) but I have been made to forget it. So search for it in the last ten days and in the odd nights among them. I also saw myself (in a dream) prostrating in mud and water." On the night of the 21st, the sky was covered with clouds and it rained, and the rainwater started leaking through the roof of the mosque at the praying place of the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). I saw with my own eyes the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) at the completion of the morning prayer leaving with his blessed face covered with mud and water.

ہم سے ابراہیم بن حمزہ نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ مجھ سے عبدالعزیز بن ابی حازم اور عبدالعزیز دراوردی نے بیان کیا، ان سے یزید بن ہاد نے، ان سے محمد بن ابراہیم نے، ان سے حضرت ابوسلمہ نے اور ان سے حضرت ابو سعید خدری رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے فرمایا کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم رمضان کے اس عشرہ میں اعتکاف کیا کرتے جو مہینے کے بیچ میں پڑتا ہے۔ بیس راتوں کے گزر جانے کے بعد جب اکیسویں تاریخ کی رات آتی تو شام کو آپ گھر واپس آ جاتے۔ جو لوگ آپ کے ساتھ اعتکاف میں ہوتے وہ بھی اپنے گھروں میں واپس آ جاتے۔ ایک رمضان میں آپ جب اعتکاف کئے ہوئے تھے تو اس رات میں بھی (مسجد ہی میں) مقیم رہے جس میں آپ کی عادت گھر آ جانے کی تھی، پھر آپ نے لوگوں کو خطبہ دیا اور جو کچھ اللہ پاک نے چاہا، آپ نے لوگوں کو اس کا حکم دیا، پھر ارشاد فرمایا کہ میں اس (دوسرے) عشرہ میں اعتکاف کیا کرتا تھا، لیکن اب مجھ پر یہ ظاہر ہوا کہ اب اس آخری عشرہ میں مجھے اعتکاف کرنا چاہئے۔ اس لیے جس نے میرے ساتھ اعتکاف کیا ہے وہ اپنے معتکف ہی میں ٹھہرا رہے اور مجھے یہ رات (شب قدر) دکھائی گئی لیکن پھر بھلوا دی گئی۔ اس لیے تم لوگ اسے آخری عشرہ (کی طاق راتوں) میں تلاش کرو۔ میں نے (خواب میں) اپنے کو دیکھا کہ اس رات کیچڑ میں سجدہ کر رہا ہوں۔ پھر اس رات آسمان پر ابر ہوا اور بارش برسی، نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے نماز پڑھنے کی جگہ (چھت سے) پانی ٹپکنے لگا۔ یہ اکیسویں کی رات کا ذکر ہے۔ میں نے خود اپنی آنکھوں سے دیکھا کہ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم صبح کی نماز کے بعد واپس ہو رہے تھے۔ اور آپ کے چہرہ مبارک پر کیچڑ لگی ہوئی تھی۔
