English Translation
And Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us... from al-Husayn ibn al-Walid who said: Abu Yusuf came to us from Hajj and we went to him. He said: 'I wish to open for you a door of knowledge that concerned me. I investigated it and went to Madinah and asked about the sa'. They said: This sa' of ours is the sa' of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). I asked them for their proof. They said: We will bring you proof tomorrow. The next morning about fifty elders from the children of the Muhajirin and Ansar came, each carrying a sa' under his cloak. Each one told me from his father or household that this was the sa' of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). I examined them and they were all the same. I calibrated them and found them to be five and a third ratls, with a slight deficiency. I saw this as strong evidence and abandoned the view of Abu Hanifah regarding the sa' and adopted the view of the people of Madinah.' Al-Husayn said: I performed Hajj that year and met Malik ibn Anas. I asked him about the sa'. He said: 'This sa' of ours is the sa' of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).' I said: 'How many ratls is it?' He said: 'A measure is not weighed in ratls - it is this.' Then I met Abdullah ibn Zayd ibn Aslam who said: 'My father told me from my grandfather that this was the sa' of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).'
