English Translation
Abu Ahmad 'Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Mihrajani narrated to us... from Ibn Shihab, from Sulayman ibn Yasar, that the people of Syria said to Abu 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him): 'Take charity from our horses and slaves.' He refused. Then he wrote to 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who also refused. They spoke to him again, and he wrote to 'Umar, and 'Umar wrote to him: 'If they wish, take it from them and return it to them, and provide for their slaves.' Malik said: meaning return it to their poor.
