English Translation
Abu Ali al-Rudhbari informed us: Muhammad ibn Bakr reported to us: Abu Dawud narrated to us: Musa ibn Isma'il narrated to us: Hammad — that is, Ibn Salamah — narrated to us, from Simak ibn Harb, from Jabir ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him), that a man camped at al-Harrah with his family and children. A [passing] man said: "A she-camel of mine has strayed; if you find her, keep her." He found her but did not find her owner, and she fell ill. His wife said: "Slaughter her." He refused. Then she died. She said: "Skin her, so that we may dry [and preserve] her fat and meat and eat it." He said: "Not until I ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." So he came to him and asked him, and he said: "Do you have wealth that suffices you?" He said: "No." He said: "Then eat her." He said: Then her owner came, and he informed him of the matter, and he [the owner] said: "Why did you not slaughter her?" He said: "I felt too shy before you." Sharik ibn Abdullah followed them [in narrating it] from Simak ibn Harb.
