English Translation
Al-Zuhri narrated: I visited Urwah ibn al-Zubayr when Ibn Abi Hunayd had written to him asking about the verse: 'When the believing women come to you as emigrants, test them' [60:10]. Urwah wrote back that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had made peace with the people of al-Hudaybiyyah and stipulated that whoever came to him without the permission of his guardian would be returned. When Muslim women migrated to the Messenger of Allah, Allah commanded him to test them, and if they came out of genuine desire for Islam, he would not return them. Allah said: 'If you find them to be believers, do not return them to the disbelievers' [60:10]. So the Messenger of Allah kept the women and returned the men.
