English Translation
Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us: Shu'bah narrated from Ata ibn al-Sa'ib from his father from Abdullah ibn Amr who said: The sun eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prayed and prolonged the standing, then he bowed and prolonged the bowing, then he raised his head and prolonged it. Shu'bah said: "And I think he said the same regarding prostration." He wept during his prostration and blew, saying: "My Lord, You did not promise me this while I seek Your forgiveness. My Lord, You did not promise me this while I am among them." When he finished praying, he said: "Paradise was displayed before me, to the point that if I had reached out my hand, I would have taken from its fruits. And the Fire was displayed before me, so I blew out of fear that its heat might reach you. I saw in it the thief of the two she-camels of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). I saw in it the brother of Banu Da'da', the thief of the pilgrims - when he was caught, he would say: 'This is the work of the hooked staff.' I saw in it a tall, dark Himyari woman being punished because of a cat she had tied up and neither fed nor watered, nor did she let it eat from the vermin of the earth, until it died. The sun and the moon do not eclipse due to anyone's death or life, but they are two of the signs of Allah. So when either of them eclipses" - or he said - "when something like that happens to either of them, hasten to the remembrance of Allah." My father said: Ibn Fudayl said: "Why would You punish them when I am among them? Why would You punish us when we seek Your forgiveness?" Shu'bah agreed with Za'idah and said: "from the vermin of the earth." Mu'awiyah narrated it to us.
