English Translation
Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us: Ma'mar narrated from al-Zuhri from Ibn al-Musayyab and Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman from Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) met me and said: "Have I not been told that you stand in prayer all night and fast all day?" - or he said: "Are you the one who says: I will surely stand in prayer all night and fast all day?" He said - I think he said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, I have said that." He said: "Then stand in prayer and sleep, fast and break your fast. Fast three days of every month, and that is equivalent to fasting the entire time." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am able to do more than that." He said: "Then fast one day and break your fast for two days." I said: "I am able to do better than that." He said: "Then fast one day and break your fast one day. That is the most balanced fasting, and it is the fast of Dawud (David)." I said: "I am able to do better than that." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "There is nothing better than that." Rawh narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Abi Hafsah informed us, Ibn Shihab informed us from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab and Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman from Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As who said: It reached the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) that I was saying: "I will surely fast perpetually and stand in prayer all night as long as I live." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Are you the one who says - or said - I will surely fast perpetually and stand in prayer all night as long as I live?" He said: I said: "Yes." He said: "You cannot endure that. So stand in prayer and sleep, fast and break your fast. Fast three days of every month, for a good deed is multiplied ten times" - and he mentioned the same meaning. Abd al-Samad narrated to us: Hisham narrated from Yahya from Abu Salamah: Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As narrated to me saying: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) entered upon me - and he mentioned a similar hadith to that of al-Zuhri.
