حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ الْهَاشِمِيُّ أَنْبَأَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ ابْنِ مُعَيْزٍ السَّعْدِيِّ قَالَ خَرَجْتُ أَسْقِي فَرَسًا لِي فِي السَّحَرِ فَمَرَرْتُ بِمَسْجِدِ بَنِي حَنِيفَةَ وَهُمْ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ مُسَيْلِمَةَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فَأَتَيْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَبَعَثَ الشُّرْطَةَ فَجَاءُوا بِهِمْ فَاسْتَتَابَهُمْ فَتَابُوا فَخَلَّى سَبِيلَهُمْ وَضَرَبَ عُنُقَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ النَّوَّاحَةِ فَقَالُوا آخَذْتَ قَوْمًا فِي أَمْرٍ وَاحِدٍ فَقَتَلْتَ بَعْضَهُمْ وَتَرَكْتَ بَعْضَهُمْ قَالَ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَدِمَ عَلَيْهِ هَذَا وَابْنُ أُثَالِ بْنِ حَجَرٍ فَقَالَ أَتَشْهَدَانِ أَنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فَقَالَا نَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُسَيْلِمَةَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ آمَنْتُ بِاللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِ لَوْ كُنْتُ قَاتِلًا وَفْدًا لَقَتَلْتُكُمَا فَلِذَلِكَ قَتَلْتُهُ.
English Translation
Sulayman ibn Dawud al-Hashimi told us, Abu Bakr ibn Ayyash informed us, Asim told us, from Abu Wa'il, from Ibn Mu'ayz al-Sa'di, who said: "I went out to water a horse of mine before dawn, and I passed by the mosque of Banu Hanifah, and they were saying that Musaylimah was the messenger of Allah. So I came to Abdullah and told him. He sent the police, and they brought them. He asked them to repent, and they repented, so he let them go, but he struck off the neck of Abdullah ibn al-Nawwahah." They said: "You seized a group in one matter, and killed some of them and left others?" He said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him - this man and Ibn Uthal ibn Hajar had come to him - say to them: 'Do you both testify that I am the Messenger of Allah?' They said: 'We testify that Musaylimah is the messenger of Allah.' The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'I believe in Allah and His messengers. Were I one who killed envoys, I would have killed you both.' That is why I killed him."
