حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ كُنَّا نُسَلِّمُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا كُنَّا بِمَكَّةَ قَبْلَ أَنْ نَأْتِيَ أَرْضَ الْحَبَشَةِ فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا مِنْ أَرْضِ الْحَبَشَةِ أَتَيْنَاهُ فَسَلَّمْنَا عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ فَأَخَذَنِي مَا قَرُبَ وَمَا بَعُدَ حَتَّى قَضَوْا الصَّلَاةَ فَسَأَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يُحْدِثُ فِي أَمْرِهِ مَا يَشَاءُ وَإِنَّهُ قَدْ أُحْدِثَ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ أَنْ لَا نَتَكَلَّمَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ.
English Translation
Sufyan told us, from Asim, from Abu Wa'il, from Abdullah, who said: "We used to greet the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when we were in Makkah, before we went to the land of Abyssinia. When we returned from the land of Abyssinia, we came to him and greeted him, but he did not return the greeting. This distressed me greatly, near and far, until they finished the prayer, and I asked him, and he said: 'Indeed Allah, Mighty and Majestic, brings about in His command whatever He wills, and He has newly brought about in His command that we should not speak during the prayer.'"
