English Translation
Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah, who said: Marwan sent Abdullah ibn Utbah to Subay'ah bint al-Harith to ask her about what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had ruled for her. She informed him that she had been married to Sa'd ibn Khawlah, who died during the Farewell Pilgrimage - and he was a veteran of Badr. She gave birth before four months and ten days had passed since his death. Abu al-Sanabil ibn Ba'kak met her when she had recovered from her postnatal bleeding and had applied kohl. He said to her: "Wait and do not rush, or something similar. Perhaps you want to marry? It is four months and ten days since your husband's death." She said: I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and mentioned to him what Abu al-Sanabil ibn Ba'kak had said. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to her: "You became lawful when you gave birth." Ibrahim ibn Khalid narrated to us, Rabah narrated to us, from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Utbah, who said: Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Utbah wrote to Abdullah ibn al-Arqam commanding him to go to Subay'ah bint al-Harith and ask her about what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had ruled for her. She claimed that she had been married to Sa'd ibn Khawlah, and he mentioned the same meaning. Ya'qub ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said: al-Zuhri narrated to me, from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Utbah, from his father, who said: I wrote to Abdullah ibn al-Arqam commanding him to go to Subay'ah al-Aslamiyyah and ask her about her situation. He said: He went to her, and he mentioned the hadith.
