English Translation
Narrated to us by Affan, who said: Wuhayb narrated to us: Abdullah ibn Uthman ibn Khuthaym narrated to us, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Sabit, who said: I went in to see Hafsah bint Abd al-Rahman and said, "I want to ask you about a matter, but I am too shy to ask you about it." She said, "Do not be shy, O son of my brother." He said: about approaching women from behind [in intercourse]. She said: "Umm Salamah narrated to me that the Ansar did not used to approach their women in that manner, and the Jews used to say that whoever approached his wife in that manner, his child would be born cross-eyed. When the Muhajirun came to Madinah, they married women of the Ansar and adopted this practice with them. One woman refused to obey her husband and said to him, 'You will not do that until I go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).' So she went in to see Umm Salamah and mentioned that to her. Umm Salamah said, 'Sit until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) comes.' When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came, the Ansari woman was too shy to ask him, so she left, and Umm Salamah told the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about it. He said, 'Call the Ansari woman.' So she was called, and he recited to her this verse: {Your wives are a tilth for you, so come to your tilth however you wish}" - meaning one single opening.
