حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ حَدَّثَنِي عُقَيْلٌ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ السُّلَمِيِّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَرَأَيْتَ أَشْيَاءَ كُنَّا نَفْعَلُهَا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ كُنَّا نَتَطَيَّرُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَلِكَ شَيْءٌ تَجِدُهُ فِي نَفْسِكَ فَلَا يَصُدَّنَّكُمْ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كُنَّا نَأْتِي الْكُهَّانَ قَالَ فَلَا تَأْتِ.
English Translation
Hajjaj narrated to us: Layth narrated to us: Uqayl narrated to me, from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Salama ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, from Mu'awiya ibn al-Hakam al-Sulami, that he said to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: What do you think of things we used to do in the Jahiliyyah -- we used to take omens? The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: That is something you find in yourself, so let it not turn you away. He said: O Messenger of Allah, we used to go to fortune-tellers. He said: Then do not go.
