حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبَانُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ وَحَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبَانُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ سَلَّامٍ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَّامٍ عَنْ أَبِي مَالِكٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الطُّهُورُ شَطْرُ الْإِيمَانِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ تَمْلَأُ الْمِيزَانَ قَالَ عَفَّانُ وَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ تَمْلَأُ مَا بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ قَالَ عَفَّانُ وَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَقَالَ عَفَّانُ مَا بَيْنَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَالصَّلَاةُ نُورٌ وَالصَّدَقَةُ بُرْهَانٌ وَالصَّبْرُ ضِيَاءٌ وَالْقُرْآنُ حُجَّةٌ عَلَيْكَ أَوْ لَكَ كُلُّ النَّاسِ يَغْدُو فَبَائِعٌ نَفْسَهُ فَمُوبِقُهَا أَوْ مُعْتِقُهَا.
English Translation
Yahya ibn Ishaq narrated to us: Aban ibn Yazid informed me — and 'Affan narrated to us, saying: Aban ibn Yazid informed us — Yahya ibn Abi Kathir narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Sallam, from Abu Sallam, from Abu Malik al-Ash'ari, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'Purification is half of faith, and "al-hamdu lillah" (praise be to Allah) fills the scale' — 'Affan said: 'and "Subhan Allah" (glory be to Allah) and "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is greatest) and "la ilaha illa Allah" (there is no god but Allah) and "Allahu Akbar" fill what is between the heaven and the earth' — 'Affan said 'and Subhan Allah and Allahu Akbar and la ilaha illa Allah,' and 'Affan said 'what is between the heavens and the earth' — 'and prayer is a light, charity is a proof, patience is a radiance, and the Qur'an is an argument for you or against you. Every person goes out in the morning and sells himself, either destroying it or freeing it.'
