English Translation
Zayd ibn al-Hubab narrated to us: Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us: Hatim ibn Hurayth narrated to me, from Malik ibn Abi Maryam, who said: We were sitting with Rabi'ah al-Jurashi, and we discussed the boiled grape/date syrup (tila') during the caliphate of al-Dahhak ibn Qays. While we were doing so, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Ghanm, the Companion of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, came in to us, and we said: 'Mention the tila'.' So we discussed the tila' — thus said Zayd ibn al-Hubab, meaning 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Ghanm, the Companion of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him — and he said: 'Abu Malik al-Ash'ari narrated to me that he heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: "Some people of my nation will surely drink wine, calling it by another name — and the one who narrated it to me is more truthful than me and than you, and the one who narrated it to him is more truthful than him and than me."' He said: 'By Allah, besides Whom there is no god, I indeed heard it from Abu Malik al-Ash'ari, who heard it from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him' — and he repeated it to him three times. Then al-Dahhak said: 'Fie upon it, the drink of the latter days!' 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, from Ma'mar, from Qatadah, from Shahr ibn Hawshab, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Ghanm, that Abu Malik al-Ash'ari said to his people — and he mentioned the like of the hadith of Sa'd, except that he said 'and he washed his feet,' and said 'and he recited the Opening of the Book in the first two rak'ahs,' making it audible to whoever was next to him.
