English Translation
'Affan narrated to us, Hammad - meaning Ibn Salamah - narrated to us, Abu Ja'far al-Khatmi informed us, from Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Qurazi, that Abu Qatadah had a debt owed to him by a man. He used to come to collect it, but the man would hide from him. One day he came, and a boy came out. He asked him about the man, and he said: 'Yes, he is in the house eating a porridge.' He called out: 'O so-and-so, come out, for I have been told you are here.' He came out to him. He said: 'What makes you hide from me?' He said: 'I am in hardship and have nothing.' He said: 'Do you swear by Allah that you are in hardship?' He said: 'Yes.' Abu Qatadah wept and then said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: "Whoever grants respite to his debtor or cancels his debt, he will be in the shade of the Throne on the Day of Resurrection."
