حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُسْلِمٍ حَدَّثَنَا الْحُصَيْنُ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى عَنْ مُعَاذٍ قَالَ كَانَ النَّاسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا سُبِقَ الرَّجُلُ بِبَعْضِ صَلَاتِهِ سَأَلَهُمْ فَأَوْمَئُوا إِلَيْهِ بِالَّذِي سُبِقَ بِهِ مِنْ الصَّلَاةِ فَيَبْدَأُ فَيَقْضِي مَا سُبِقَ ثُمَّ يَدْخُلُ مَعَ الْقَوْمِ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ فَجَاءَ مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ وَالْقَوْمُ قُعُودٌ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ فَقَعَدَ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَامَ فَقَضَى مَا كَانَ سُبِقَ بِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ اصْنَعُوا كَمَا صَنَعَ مُعَاذٌ.
English Translation
Abd al-Samad told us, Abd al-Aziz — namely Ibn Muslim — told us, al-Husayn told us, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from Mu'adh, who said: In the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, if a man missed part of the prayer, the people would ask him, and they would signal to him what part of the prayer he had missed, and he would begin by making up what he had missed, then join the people in their prayer. Then Mu'adh ibn Jabal came while the people were sitting in their prayer, so he sat down too; and when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, finished, he stood and made up what he had missed. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Do as Mu'adh has done.
