English Translation
'Affan told us, Aban — that is, Ibn Yazid al-'Attar — told us: Yahya b. Abi Kathir told me, from Abu Salamah b. 'Abd al-Rahman, from Nu'aym b. Hazzal, that Hazzal had taken Ma'iz b. Malik into his service, and he had a slave-girl called Fatimah who had been betrothed and used to graze their sheep. Ma'iz had intercourse with her and told Hazzal, who deceived him, saying: "Go to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and tell him — perhaps a Qur'an will be revealed concerning you." So the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered him and he was stoned. When the sting of the stones bit into him, he ran off fleeing, and a man met him with the jawbone of a slaughtered camel, or the shin-bone of a camel, and struck him with it, knocking him down. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Woe to you, O Hazzal! Had you covered him with your garment, it would have been better for you."
