English Translation
Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr al-Muqaddami, Khalaf ibn Hisham al-Bazzar, and Ubaydullah ibn Umar al-Qawariri narrated to me, they said: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us: Asim narrated to us, from Zirr, who said: I said to Ubayy ibn Ka'b, "Abu al-Mundhir, tell me about the Night of Decree, for our companion" — meaning Ibn Mas'ud — "used to say, when asked about it, 'Whoever stands in prayer the whole year will attain it.'" He said: "May Allah have mercy on Abu Abd al-Rahman. Indeed, by Allah, he knew that it is in Ramadan, but he preferred that they not rely solely on it. And it is the night of the twenty-seventh" — without exception. I said, "Abu al-Mundhir, how did you come to know that?" He said: "By the sign which the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, told us of: on the morning of the Night of Decree, the sun rises having no rays, as if it were a basin, until it climbs high." This is the wording of al-Muqaddami's account. Affan narrated to us: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us: Asim narrated to us, from Zirr, who said: I said to Ubayy ibn Ka'b, "Abu al-Mundhir, tell me about the Night of Decree," and he related the account. He said: I said, "O Abu al-Mundhir, how did you come to know that?" He said: "By the sign that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, informed us of."
