English Translation
Sufyan ibn Uyaynah narrated to us, from Abdah and Asim, from Zirr, who said: I said to Ubayy, "Your brother erases them from the copy of the Qur'an, yet he did not object." It was said to Sufyan, "Ibn Mas'ud?" He said, "Yes, and they are not in Ibn Mas'ud's copy of the Qur'an. He used to see the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, seek protection for al-Hasan and al-Husayn with them, but he never heard him recite them in any part of his prayer, so he supposed that they were merely formulas of protection, and he persisted in his supposition, while the rest of the Companions were certain that they were part of the Qur'an, and so they entrusted them within it.
