حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ حَدَّثَنِي أَيُّوبُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَمْرَو بْنَ سَلِمَةَ قَالَ لَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْفَتْحِ جَعَلَ النَّاسُ يَمُرُّونَ عَلَيْنَا قَدْ جَاءُوا مِنْ عِنْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَكُنْتُ أَقْرَأُ وَأَنَا غُلَامٌ فَجَاءَ أَبِي بِإِسْلَامِ قَوْمِهِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَؤُمُّكُمْ أَكْثَرُكُمْ قُرْآنًا فَنَظَرُوا فَكُنْتُ أَكْثَرَهُمْ قُرْآنًا قَالَ فَقَالَتْ امْرَأَةٌ غَطُّوا اسْتَ قَارِئِكُمْ قَالَ فَاشْتَرَوْا لَهُ بُرْدَةً قَالَ فَمَا فَرِحْتُ أَشَدَّ مِنْ فَرَحِي بِذَلِكَ.
English Translation
Amr ibn Salamah said: When the day of the Conquest came, the people would pass by us having come from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and I used to recite Quran as a young boy. My father came with the Islam of his people to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'The one who leads you in prayer should be the one who knows the most Quran among you.' They looked and I was the one who knew the most Quran among them, so they put me forward to lead them while I was a boy of six or seven years old.
