English Translation
'Affan told us, Hammad ibn Salama told us, Yunus told us, 'Abida al-Hujaymi told us, from Abu Tamima al-Hujaymi, from Abu Jurayy Jabir ibn Sulaym, who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while he was reclining wrapped in a woolen wrap, its fringe having fallen upon his feet. I said, "Which of you is Muhammad, or the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?" He gestured with his hand toward himself. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am from the desert, and in me is their roughness, so advise me." He said: "Do not belittle any act of kindness, even if it is only meeting your brother with a cheerful face, or pouring from your bucket into the vessel of one seeking water. And if a man reviles you with something he knows about you, do not revile him with something you know about him, for its reward will be yours and its burden will be upon him. And beware of trailing your lower garment, for trailing the lower garment is a form of vanity, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, does not love vanity. And do not revile anyone." He said: I never reviled anyone after that, neither a person, nor a sheep, nor a camel.
