حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْأَوْزَاعِيَّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي رَبِيعَةُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ وَاثِلَةَ بْنَ الْأَسْقَعِ يَقُولُ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ أَتَزْعُمُونَ أَنِّي آخِرِكُمْ وَفَاةً أَلَا إِنِّي مِنْ أَوَّلِكُمْ وَفَاةً وَتَتْبَعُونِي أَفْنَادًا يُهْلِكُ بَعْضُكُمْ بَعْضًا.
English Translation
Abu al-Mughirah told us, saying: I heard al-Awza'i say: Rabi'ah ibn Yazid told me, saying: I heard Wathilah ibn al-Asqa' say: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came out to us and said: "Do you suppose that I will be the last of you to die? No indeed, I am among the first of you to die, and you will follow after me in successive groups, destroying one another."
