English Translation
Abdullah told us: Ibrahim ibn al-Hajjaj al-Naji told me: Abd al-Qahir ibn al-Sari told us: A son of Kinana ibn Abbas ibn Mirdas told me, from his father, that his father al-Abbas ibn Mirdas told him: that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the evening of Arafah, prayed for his nation for forgiveness and mercy, and prayed at length. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, answered him: 'I have done so, and I have forgiven your nation, except for one who has wronged another.' He said, 'O Lord, You are able to forgive the wrongdoer and give the wronged one something better than his grievance as compensation.' But there was nothing further that evening besides that. When the next day came, he prayed on the morning at Muzdalifah, and again prayed for his nation. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had not paused long before he smiled. Some of his Companions said, 'O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, you smiled at a moment when you do not usually smile — what made you smile? May Allah brighten your years!' He said, 'I smiled at the enemy of Allah, Iblis, when he realized that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, had answered my prayer for my nation and forgiven the wrongdoer. He fell down, calling out in ruin and woe, and throwing dust upon his head. So I smiled at what his distress made him do.'
